Definition

Nobert Wiener, an American mathematician, is considered by most to be the founder of Cybernetics. The word cybernetics comes from the Greek word meaning "to steer or to navigate”, and refers to systems of all kinds (biological, social, technological...) the interaction of actions and the deployment of predictable goals, objectives...

Wiener himself defined cybernetics as the science of control and communication in humans and machines.

In other words, cybernetics is the transdisciplinary study, not only of the nature of systems but also how these systems work. His approach is not about what, but about how.

Cybernetics therefore strives to comprehend the interactions that take place within a system itself, building the coherence of this system and giving it a particular behaviour - cybernetics in fact considers systems as "active" entities, and focuses precisely on determining the catalysts at the origin of these actions.

These catalysts can take different forms depending on the nature of the systems studied: electronic messages in technological systems, nervous messages in biology, interpersonal communications in social systems...

Finally, the cybernetic approach consists in modelling the exchanges that take place in a given system, in order to offer their observer, the possibility to administer them as efficiently as possible. These exchanges are considered to be the determinants of the intelligible dynamics of the entire system. Properly governed, they must then make it possible to predict this dynamic.
