Definition

Choosing by consent means that you can move forward when no one objects to the proposal.

It differs from:
* decision-making by consensus, where everyone in the room needs to make agree on the proposal,
* democracy, where decisions are made by making people vote, usually until a majority agree with the proposal.

Many self-managed organization choose decision by consent as their preferred decision-making process. Both the Holacracy and Sociocracy frameworks of self-organization reach decisions by consent.

Faster Decisions

One benefit of consent-based decision-making is that it speeds up decision making compared to consensus. Indeed, when you don't have to wait for everyone to agree on a proposal, things start moving faster.

Less Resentment

A decision made after a vote by majority can carry resentment when the results were influenced by the popularity or status of someone who may or may not be strongly impacted by the decision.

Empowerment

Consent-based decision-making encreases employee engagement because it ensures that the people doing the work have more influence on the final decision.

Indeed, individuals can move forward with their preferred way of doing things as long as nobody has a well-argued objection.

Unreasonable objections like "I'd rather you do it this way" – from people who are often further from the operational consequences of the decision – no longer carry any weight.
